Fiston Mwanza Mujila, a Congolese writer, has won the 2015 Etisalat Prize for Literature for his book, titled Tram 83.
He defeated two other authors; Penny Busetto (The Story of Anna P as told by herself) and What will People Say by Rehana Rossouw to win the prestigious literary prize.
The winner was announced Saturday night at a colourful grand finale held at Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, by a panel of judges, led by Professor Ato Quayson, who disclosed that over 100 entries were received which were shotlisted to three.
Mujila received a cash prize of 15000 pounds.
The Flash Fiction category was won by Kuti Ojuolape Modupe for her story titled Gone.
Announcing her winner, Chair of the judges Mr Toni Kani said
Kuti’s Gone emerged winner out of over 1300 entries.
He commended Etisalat Nigeria for the integrity it has shown over the years which is evident in the quality of books that have won the prestigious prize.
His words: “Out of over 1300 entries received in the Flash Fiction category, only 50 were selected. The entries all expressed our emotions and issues that affect us as a people.”
Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer, Etisalat Nigeria, Mr Matthew Wilsher, in his opening remarks, noted that the “Etisalat Prize for Literature reflects this year’s theme, ‘Representing the Diversity of African Voices’, “a foundation for innovation which is something we truly believe in, something in our roots. Diversity is very true in literature while innovation is very important in literary world. The diversity in literature is key. It is not about the cheque of 15,000 pounds but about recognising writers and rewarding publishers.
“At Etisalat we don’t just invest money but also invest time”.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and pop star Ciara have been dating since April of 2015. While their love for each other has bordered on being very mushy and cheesy at times, the two have been an extremely adorable couple. It was only a matter of time before Wilson and Ciara got engaged. That time has come, according to Wilson himself.

The Seahawks quarterback is coming off the best season of his NFL career. In his fourth season in the league, Wilson led the NFL with a 110.1 passer rating. He compiled an impressive stat line of 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions along with 4,024 yards passing. 2015 was his first season with more than 4,000 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. Wilson also attempted more than 30 passes per game during the regular season, the most of his career.

Nollywood actress Nkiru Sylvanus has been trailed with so many controversies over the span of her career with most of them bordering on her marital status. On three occasions, it had been rumoured that she got married secretly all of which she has denied.
So frequent have the reports been that an account actually claimed that the actress was so desperate to get married that she settled to become the second wife to a prominent northerner.
When the actress was asked in a recent interview whether she was currently in a relationship, the screen diva simply said, “I should be dating, don’t you think so?”
She further said that she would get married when the time comes, urging her fans to keep calm on issues that border on her private life.
“I will settle down whenever it comes, it is a thing of the mind, so when you think your mind is ready to settle down, you will. For me, it could be now, it could be tomorrow, next year or next five years. For instance, male fans will always try to woo me, it’s part of living, but you have to have a polite way of saying no. If I say no, I mean no,” she said.
Asked how she feels about the fact that controversies seem to always hound her, Sylvanus said that she had been in the industry for a long while and so used to rumours being peddled about her. She described it as part of being relevant in the movie industry.
She said, “Controversy is part of life. If nobody talks about you, then you don’t exist. So, it is good when people talk about you. It helps you to shape up your life, it makes you to work harder to surprise people the more and make them understand that it is not really about what they think; it’s about who you are and who you want to be.”
The prolific actress who has been away from the television screen due to an appointment she got from the governor of her state, Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, said that she is back to making movies. She emphasised that she never quit acting and she vowed that it would never happen as long as she breathes.
“I never left Nollywood. All I am saying is that I will do more movies this year. I took a break but I didn’t leave Nollywood and I will never leave Nollywood. I gave myself a break because I felt I needed a time out,” she said.

TheOIL MARKETERS, who confirmed to our correspondent that they had stopped importation, said they could not continue with fuel importation as result of inadequate funds.
They spoke through the Executive Secretary, MajorOIL MARKETERS Association of Nigeria, Mr. Obafemi Olawore.
Olawore, along with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, also denied the report that they were on strike.
He said they were still waiting for the Federal Government to call them to another roundtable on how to pay the N200bn fuel subsidy owed them.
Olawore said, “We are not on strike. People are just painting us the way they want. We are not importing because we don’t have the money to buy the products. The government has not invited us. The only thing we have heard is the resolution of the Senate on Thursday and I think that they are going to invite us soon.”
Out of N356.2bn subsidy the government reportedly owedOIL MARKETERS, the Ministry of Finance paid the sum of N156bn about two weeks ago.
With about five days to the handover of power to a new administration at the federal level, tanker drivers in the country have also stopped lifting fuel from the depots, leaving many filling stations without the product and others selling at exorbitant prices.
The General Secretary, NUPENG, Mr. Isaac Aberare, said tankers drivers would start lifting the product as soon as they received the directive to do so, insisting that they were not strike.
He said, “If there are products in the depots, we will go there and load. Remember that the Lagos State Government gave tankers drivers 48 hours to leave the road instead of clogging the whole road and making navigation difficult; we have complied with that instruction. Any time there are products, we will go and load.”
In its response to the lingering fuel scarcity in the country, the Senate on Thursday directed its Committee on Petroleum Resources (upstream and downstream) to commence a full investigation into the causes of the persistent fuel crisis.
The directive was made following a motion by the Deputy Senate Majority Leader, Senator Abdul Ningi.
Ningi said, “We need to know whether fuel scarcity has come to stay. We need to know whether it has become part of our lives. We need to plan.
“By planning and talking about it, we are now sensitising Nigerians to brace for the impending issue of fuel scarcity whether it is going to be here permanently or it is temporary.”
Former African Footballer of the Year Emmanuel Adebayor has launched an astonishing attack on his family, in which the Tottenham Hotspur striker accuses them of turning their backs on him, renting out property he paid for without his knowledge. In the case of his brother Rotimi, Adebayor accused him stealing mobile telephones while at a football academy in France.
In a lengthy Facebook post, the Togo international Adebayor talked about the financial burden of supporting his family but his reasons for bringing the issues light were an effort for other families to “learn from what happened in mine”, adding “keep in mind that none of this is about money.”
In the post, he has claimed he was prevented from seeing his now-deceased brother Peter who was seriously ill and was told by his mother to “just give money”. He also says that, after a 2005 meeting to resolve their family’s problems, he was told to build each member a house and to pay them a monthly wage.
“I was in Ghana when I received the news about my brother Peter being seriously ill,” Adebayor claimed. “I drove the fastest I could to Togo in order to meet him and help. When I arrived, my mother said I could not see him and I should just give the money and she would solve everything. Only God knows how much I gave her that day.
“I organised a meeting in 2005 to solve our family issues. When I asked them about their opinion, they said I should build each family member a house and give each of them a monthly wage.”
Adebayor, who played for Metz and Monaco before moving to the Premier League with first Arsenal in 2006, then on to Manchester City and Tottenham, said of his brother Rotimi, “When I was in Monaco I thought it would be good to have a family of footballers. So I made sure my brother Rotimi gets into a football academy in France. Within a few months; out of 27 players, he stole 21 phones.”
He has also claimed that his sister rented out a house he bought in Ghana for her to stay in without his permission. “A couple years ago, I bought a house in East Lagon (Ghana) for $1.2m,” claimed Adebayor. “I found it normal to let my older sister, Yabo Adebayor stay in that house. I also allowed my half brother (Daniel) to stay in the same house.
A few months later, I was on vacation and decided to go to that house. At my surprise, I saw many cars in the driveway. In fact, my sister decided to rent out the house without me knowing.
“When I called her and asked for explanation, she took about 30 minutes to abuse and insult me over the phone. I called my mother to explain the situation and she did the same as my sister. This same sister says I am ungrateful.”
Last November, Adebayor denied stories he had kicked his mother out of his house in Togo and accused people of practising witchcraft against him. He has now claimed she has turned her back on him, despite using his face in order to promote a cookie business.
“At the age of 17, with my first wages as a footballer, I built a house for my family and made sure they are safe,” he wrote. “As you all know, I have received the trophy of African Player of the Year in 2008. I also brought my mother on stage with me to thank her for everything. In that same year, I brought her to London for various medical checkups. When my daughter was born, we contacted my mum to inform her but she immediately hung up the phone and didn’t wanna know hear about it.
“Apart from all that l also gave my mother a great amount of money to start a business of cookies and different items. Naturally, I allowed them to put my name and picture on them so they can sell more. What else can a son do in his power to support his family?”
Tell us about a little bit about yourself
I was born and raised in the suburbs of New York City, where I currently live with my husband,
daughter and three step-daughters. I have a boxer named Destiny and a ragdoll cat named
Colby. I earned an undergraduate degree in special education and a graduate degree in reading
and literacy. I work full time as a special education teacher and enjoy making a difference in the
lives of my students.
My passion is writing, I’ve been creating stories and poetry since I was a young child. I spend my
free time reading just about anything I can get my hands on. I’m a romantic at heart and love
to create stories with unforgettable characters. I like to travel and have visited several
Caribbean Islands, Mexico, and Costa Rica. I’m currently working on her sixth novel.
What inspired you to write “The Calm After The Storm”?
I chose this setting during the actual aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. My family and
I were without power for close to two weeks and I started to see utility workers
from down south on the roads helping to restore power. A story started to take
shape in my mind.
How did you come up with the title?
My main characters, Emma and Jake both had stormy pasts, issues that kept them
from moving forward with relationships. When they met each other, they were
battling the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. What came after the storm? My hope
was to have both characters set aside their stormy pasts.
Was “The Calm After the Storm” based on any realistic events? If so, how?
Yes, it was based on the setting of Hurricane Sandy and the aftermath of the
storm. The characters in my story, however, are purely fictional.
How long does it take you to write a book?
It depends. This one took me about a year from start to finish, some other ones
have taken longer and some have taken much shorter periods of time. It varies
depending upon the length of story and the amount of time I can dedicate to my
writing.
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
The hardest part of writing this story had to be creating the characters of Ginny
and Hank. (Jake’s ex-wife and her new boyfriend) These characters were flawed
and suffered emotionally. I like to create likeable characters, these were the
villains and it was harder to connect with them. That being said, in the end, many
people shared their feelings about these characters, so I guess I succeeded with
my goal.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Again, I find it much easier to create likeable characters, so it’s the villains that I
tend to struggle with.
What are your favorite things about Jake and Emma as individuals and as a
couple?
Some favorite things about this couple is the fact that they have such a
connection and that they are both willing to put their own needs to the side. I
love the fact that have strong family values.
Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
I learned that sometimes good can come from a tough situation. I learned that
people can come together to help each other and form new friendships during
times of hardship.
Is there a message in your book that you want readers to take with them when
the read “The Calm After The Storm”?
I believe that true love can conquer the darkest storm, a message I tried to
convey in my story.
