The Kaduna State Government on Monday chided the organised labour on threats to proceed on strike if the government failed to stop ongoing verification of workers.
A statement by Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i through his media aide, Samuel Aruwan, on Monday in Kaduna warned that any worker that failed to participate in the verification exercise would be removed from payroll.
It said the that the verification was compulsory, as it would aid the administration in updating its pay record.
On the threats by labour, the government stressed that “public servants first became employees before they became union members.
“Cooperation with the employer to verify the status of every worker is expected. It cannot be made a reason for industrial action.
“Refusal to participate in verification will result in the concerned persons being removed from the payroll.
“The labour leadership seems to be afraid that workers will opt-out of joining unions.
“If that be the case, the unions should seek ways to increase their attraction to workers, including persuading them to opt for continued membership.
“Inciting workers against a legitimate process of updating their personnel records is counter-productive.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress in the state had urged workers to ignore government’s directive to indicate whether to belong to unions or not.
The labour unions said on Saturday that they regarded the exercise as a deliberate attempt strangle labour movement in the state.(NAN)
Striking Ogun workers on Monday unleashed their anger on a lawmaker, Olayiwola Ojodu, when he appeared at the Nigeria Labour Congress headquarters in the state, by attacking him and breaking the rear window of his car.
The workers were being addressed by the state Chairman of the NLC, Akeem Ambali, when the lawmaker, who is the Chairman of the state’s House of Assembly Committee on Works, drove in, and immediately they recognised him.
After the lawmaker delivered a letter to Ambali and was about to enter his car, some of the workers turned violent and attacked him.
The pelted the car with stones and other objects they could lay their hands. Ojodu hurriedly drove off, but the rear window of the car got shattered, before he could leave the NLC premises.
Ojodu, it was gathered, was at the NLC secretariat to deliver a letter of appreciation in furtherance to earlier meetings between the House and the leadership of the striking workers, last week.
When contacted on the phone, Ojodu said he was at the Secretariat to deliver the letter as requested by
the workers, but declined to comment further on the incident.

He said, “I don’t want to talk because we are looking for peace and not trouble. The House of Assembly is intervening and what they demanded is what I came to give them. They demanded a letter and that is what I came to give them, the letter is with them and they will read and reveal the content.”
The Lagos State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs on Thursday commended the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, and all the security agencies in the state for the prompt and successful rescue of the students of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary School in Ikorodu who were kidnapped by gunmen at their school on 29 February.
The traditional rulers, who paid a courtesy visit to the Governor at the Lagos House in Ikeja, said the swift response and collaboration between the state government and security agencies which culminated in the rescue of the three affected girls and arrest of the hoodlums, was highly commendable and that same was an eloquent confirmation that security and welfare of the people is paramount to the current administration in the state.
At the end of the visit, Oba of Lagos, HRM Rilwan Akiolu said the kidnap of the girls had again brought to the fore the need to remind Lagosians to be security conscious and be alert at any given point in time.
He said: “We are here to appreciate what God has done in the rescue of the abducted schoolgirls and to thank the Governor, the security forces, particularly the Commissioner of Police, the State Director of DSS, the Commander of 9th Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army and all other security forces who worked tirelessly to rescue the three children.
