The Benue State house of Assembly will wind up sittings to mark the end of the 7th Assembly today.
The 8th assembly is to be officially inaugurated tomorrow to forestall a vacuum.
This might not be posible. The PDP has the highest number of legislators and the APC government has vowed to make sure the speaker must be an APC legislator. In this light the inauguration has been shifted to friday.
It is alleged that The Government is offering between N5 million and 10 million naira each to the PDP legislators to support a particular APC legislator for the position of speaker.
One wouldn't have been worried because it is the normal maneuvering in party politics.
The worry of the Benue people emanates from the fact that few days after inauguration the Government that has pledged to fight corruption will involve in bribery and corruption to impose a speaker on the legislators.
A government that has pledged to respect the constitutional roles of the tiers of Government will be so neck deep into making the legislators rubber stamp. It suggests that the government is not ready to work.
For a state that has huge debts profile and a back log of unpaid salaries and near lack of infrastructure to deal with. It is worrying that it will engage in this wild goose and shadow chase.
The Legislators should stand up and insist on their independence.
The legislators must avoid been seen as a rubber stamp, brown envelop and Ghana must go assembly.
